Driverless Cars To Hit The Road In 2015

FINALLY!  Cars that can drive themselves are no longer science fiction.  Google is planning to build 100 small driverless cars that it hopes to have on public roads sometime next year. The two-seat prototype cars, which only go as fast as 25 miles per hour, won't be for sale, but will be given to selected operators for testing and tweaking. The cars, which look kind of like rounder VW Beetles, don't have steering wheels or gas and brake pedals. They start with a button, with passengers setting a destination and a route, and the car driving itself there, using sensors, including radar and cameras, and computer programs that predict what other cars and pedestrians might do. It runs on electricity, and can go about 100 miles before having to be charged. Although car companies are working on driverless technologies, the earliest dates so companies have put out for them is 2020. With Google wanting to put these cars in use next year, regulators have to come up with guidelines for driverless cars on public roads.
