Bathroom Wipes Being Blamed For Clogged Sewers

Bathroom wipes are being blamed for creating clogs in sewer systems around the country, with an increase in the problem roughly coinciding with the growing popularity of the pre-moistened towelettes over the past four years. Wastewater authorities say that even though many of the wipes are labeled as flushable, they aren't breaking down as they go through the sewer system, which is costing municipalities millions of dollars as they have to deal with clogs and replace and upgrade machinery. Manufacturers contend that flushable wipes aren't the problem, saying instead that it's adults using baby wipes and other cleaning wipes that are labeled non-flushable. AP cited a trade group as saying sales of bathroom wipes have increased nearly five percent a year since 2007, and they're now a $6 billion-a-year industry.
