Nutrition Label Get Face Lift
First Lady Michelle Obama yesterday (February 27th) announced an overhaul of the nutrition label found on most packaged foods, the first major change in more than two decades. The changes, which have been in the works by the Food and Drug Administration for more than 10 years, are meant to make it easier for consumers to understand the labels and to make them reflect the latest scientific information. The changes include:
  • "Calories" appearing in a larger font and the number of calories even bigger and bolded.
  • Serving sizes updated to reflect the amounts that people actually eat. The number of servings per container will also appear larger and bolder.
  • New subcategory added under sugar for "added sugar" which doesn't occur naturally in the food.
  • Vitamins A and C will no longer be required to be listed, but vitamin D and potassium are being added because data show people aren't getting enough of them.
  • The daily value for sodium is slight decreasing, while the daily values for dietary fiber and vitamin D are increasing.

According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, Americans throw away up to 40 percent of the nation's food supply every year. That's $165 billion in food. Partially to blame are food labels and those expiration dates.  Thanks to inconsistent and confusing labeling, Americans throw away huge portions of perfectly edible food. Credit Cards To Stop Requiring Signatures By 2015

Goodbye credit card signatures and hello PIN numbers. In a move that could better protect consumers from massive security breaches, major credit card companies are looking to implement a chip-and-PIN system instead of the tired and true swipe-and-sign method used across the country.

Both MasterCard and Visa have outlined a planned shift to the new EMV system and set a October 2015 deadline to begin using the system, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Gas Savings Club
We all reminisce about the gold 'ol days of when gas was under a dollar a gallon but those days appear to be gone for good.  It's a hard pill to swallow but and we have to accept the fact that the price of fuel will continue to increase.  With that in mind, AARP blogger suggest you start a  $4 A Gallon Gas Savings Club.

The idea is simple, budget for gas to be $4 a gallon today even as gas hovers well below that number. With the current price of gas around $3.50 a gallon now, what do you do with the extra $.50?  Save it!  As mentioned earlier, the price of petroleum is likely to increase before it decreases.  The theory is that your budget will not be whacked out as long as gas doesn't go over $4 a gallon...AND you enjoy some extra money you can save to pay for fuel once it goes over $4; again without throwing you out of your budget (at least for a short time).

Warning About Counterfeit Perfumes & Colognes
Something stinks, doctors warn that there has been a recent rise in the production of counterfeit fragrances and that they can post a health hazard. One researcher says, "What is often in fake fragrances are ingredients like antifreeze, poorly based chemicals and urine." Experts say the fake perfumes are often sold online or by street vendors and discount retailers. The FBI encourages consumers to be on the lookout for signs that the fragrance is a fake, saying the packaging will vary slightly from that of authentic brands, and the products are often advertised as "limited edition" and sold at dramatically lower prices. Researchers say you should also look at the fragrance's color saying, "If it's too pale, that means it's heavy alcohol. If it's too dark, it is most likely using faux chamicals."

#BringJT2UF

On March 8, Kentucky will travel to the O'Connell Center to take on Florida in what could be the biggest game of the conference season. While both teams are expected to have locked up at-large bids by that point, there is the added possibility that the regular season title could be on the line. And with the conference's best team going up against its most talented group, all eyes will be fixed on The O'Dome.

To make things extra special, Florida wants to bring in "The President of Pop" to sing the national anthem.

That's right, Florida's student organization, known as the "Men's Basketbal Rowdies," named after the "Rowdy Reptiles" student section, is actively campaigning to have Justin Timberlake sing the "Star Spangled Banner" before the biggest home game of the season.

So what can you do to help this happen?  Click here to read the rest of the story.  #BringJT2UF

CVS To Stop Selling Tobacco Products By October 1
CVS/Caremark, the country’s largest drugstore chain, announced on Wednesday that it planned to stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products by October 2014.  Click here to read the story.

To be honest, I never understood why a pharmacy store, devoted to healthcare, would ever sell tobacco.  It will be interesting to see if other drug stores follow CVS's direction.

Allowance Inflation
A new report found that the number of parents offering more than $10 or $20 a week for allowance is on the rise, Reuters reports.

The number of parents offering below $10 a week for allowance fell to 68.4% from 77.3% in 2011. On the flip side, 4% of families are giving their children between $41 to $50 per week. For a few lucky kids, there are the more than 1% of families that give between $91 to $100 per week.

Stuart Ritter, a senior financial planner with T. Rowe Price, who conducted the Parents, Kids & Money Survey. said there are a few reasons higher allowances are cropping up: a better economy and sharing financial decisions with kids, such as paying for their own clothes.

Additionally, older children are also to blame for allowance inflation, Ritter says. The more typical $5 won’t get much for a 14-year-old these days.

Shelling out big bucks for your child’s allowance might not be doing much good when it comes to teaching your kid financial responsibility, Lewis Mandell, the former management dean at SUNY, says.

When reviewing financial literacy tests, Mandell found that kids with unconditional allowances tended to do the worst. He suggests parents tie chores and allowance together to show that money is valued and earned.

Parents should also stick to their guns when little Johnny comes home crying that little Bob gets enough allowance to buy the entire class happy meals.

Remember, you’re not a terrible parent if you only give your kid $10 a week in allowance, Mandell says.
