FINALLY! Cars that can drive themselves are no longer science fiction. Google is planning to build 100 small driverless cars that it hopes to have on public roads sometime next year. The two-seat prototype cars, which only go as fast as 25 miles per hour, won't be for sale, but will be given to selected operators for testing and tweaking. The cars, which look kind of like rounder VW Beetles, don't have steering wheels or gas and brake pedals. They start with a button, with passengers setting a destination and a route, and the car driving itself there, using sensors, including radar and cameras, and computer programs that predict what other cars and pedestrians might do. It runs on electricity, and can go about 100 miles before having to be charged. Although car companies are working on driverless technologies, the earliest dates so companies have put out for them is 2020. With Google wanting to put these cars in use next year, regulators have to come up with guidelines for driverless cars on public roads.
Have you ever heard the old superstition that you are suppose to hold your breath through a tunnel? I'm not sure where this originated from but a 19-year-old Oregon man caused a three-car crash when he fainted while holding his breath driving through a tunnel!
You know you're arrived when a portrait of yourself is added to the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Museum in D.C.! According to Billboard, the museum said earlier this week that a 2010 portrait of the singer by artistWill Cotton titled, "Cupcake Katy" will go on view starting on June 18th. The painting will be part of a rotating display of recently acquired portraits.
If you're a Verizon customer you should be aware of a new scam. Many Verizon customers have reported getting a robotic call that demands their account information. Victims were told to visit MyVerison59.com in order to get a 59 dollar credit on their Verizon bill. The site has since been removed, but looked like a Verizon login page. Many people apparently entered their information, which of course is a huge security risk. Experts say to avoid being scammed, check out any too-good-to-be-true promises that come out of nowhere and check with a company directly if something just doesn't sound right.
What was once seen as a fashion faux paux is apparently now viewed as a fashion statement-- people are purposely wearing socks with sandals. The look has been seen on the runway models of Kate Spade, Tory Burch and Burberry, which in turn has caused fashionistas to embrace strapping their sandals on over their socks. A stylist says to rock the look wear "lightweight and solid-colored socks with flat-formed shoes. You'll definitely want to show some skin and sex this trend up to avoid feeling frumpy."
Good grief!!! Teeth tattoos are an emerging trend as people seek to decorate their mouths with images of their favorite things. The Suburbia Dental Laboratory in Bloomfield, Connecticut made its first tattooed crown 20 years ago when a customer asked for an image of a corvette. The tattoos can't yet be applied to healthy teeth, but are available for patients requiring a crown that don't want the pain of getting an actual tattoo. The dental stain tattoo, which costs between $75 and $200, is created by taking a mold of the patient's tooth and then adding the design to the crown which is heated up to 212-degrees to make the art take hold.
The times are changing! We've been taught since we were kids that in case of an emergency we should call 9-1-1, but now you can text 9-1-1 too. The FCC says it's rolling out the service to make it easier for those who are deaf, hard of hearing, have a speech disability, or who are in a situation in which making a call could be dangerous. So far no technology exists to triangulate the place a text was sent from, so the FCC is telling 9-1-1 texters they will have to provide information about the situation and their exact location. Also, the service will only be available in select areas of certain states for now.
In an effort to cut down on food being thrown away, a restaurant in Losone, Switzerland, that has an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet is charging customers a fee of $5.65 if they don't eat everything they've put on their plate. Chef Giovanni Tafuro of the restaurant Patrizietta told the 20 Minutes newspaper, "I wanted to send a strong signal. It made me sick to see so much food being thrown out." Yahoo Food says this has been done before, citing a Chinese buffet-style restaurant in the U.K. that announced in 2012 that it would fine diners a whopping $34 if they didn't clean their plates.
I believe everyone should hold a job at least once in the the food industry and in customer service. Once you have dealt with customers, you tend to be on your best behavior when a problem arises. I've been in a restaurant where the customer is fussing at the waiter because their food order is wrong. News flash...it isn't automatically the waiter/waitress fault!!! So when I saw this article about 9 customers who make it tough for all of us, I had to share. Take a look at it.
If a Facebook friend gets engaged, do you expect to see a photo of the ring? Apparently women are concerned about how their hands look in these engagement ring selfies, and as a result are getting "hand-lifts." Plastic surgeons explain the procedure consists of injecting the anti-aging treatment Juvederm into the hands of patients to make them appear plumper and more youthful. One plastic surgeon from the New York City area says he's been doing more of the procedures lately, in part due to the hand selfie trend. The procedure is said to last for nine months, and costs over a thousand dollars.

You know what commercials I'm talking about. Those ASPCA commercials that shows abused animals while "Angel" plays in the background.
Well you and I aren't the only ones who gets so teary-eyed and sniffily that you have to change the channel. Sarah McLachlan, who sings the song Angel, admitted yesterday that she finds the commercials difficult to watch and changes the channel too!
Tipping at restaurants may be a thing of the past sooner than expected. Even more upscale restaurants are banning tips, and one expert says the move protects waiters from being shortchanged by cheap diners. The expert also says the downside to tip-banning is that diners get sticker shock when they look at the prices of food with tips factored in. The owner of an upscale restaurant in Los Angeles explains by saying, "We interview and hire our employees, not the guest, and we expect to pay them, and be responsible for their actions. If they do great, we keep them, and if they don't, we let them go. We don't want their pay to be at the mercy of a guest's random calculation, based on unpredictable factors."
If your mom really enjoys her wine there’s a gift that’s perfect for her for Mother’s Day. It’s called the FlaskScarf, and is basically a scarf that doubles as a flask. The fabric fashion accessory contains a hidden foil bag with a mouth valve that can hold eight ounces of liquid. The product description reads, “[It’s] everything you need to get your drink on and look good doing it. Don’t settle for just one, you deserve both!” The item is available for purchase on FlaskScarf.com.
There are several websites that offer to trade your unwanted gift cards for a wanted one. Some, like Cardpool even offer you cash for those gift cards. Now unwanted gift cards can be traded out for cash conveniently in your grocery store!
Coinstar, the machine where you can trade your money coins for paper cash is launching new kiosks that will accept unwanted gift cards and for cash. The company is planting these new machines next to their older, coin-gobbling ones and soon will be in our area.
