This is the Inspiration for Lorde's Royals song

Every wonder what inspired Lorde to pen Royals? It's not about the Royal Family as I thought. Actually it's because of a photo in National Geographic of Kansas City Royals third baseman George Brett. Lorde said the word "Royals" on his jersey struck a chord with her and inspired her to write the song.

Princess Elsa Dress Is The Must Have Item

Remember when "Tickle Me Elmo" prompted people to trample each other? The newest "hot toy" is here-- and parents are forking over thousands of dollars for it. It all stems from Disney's Frozen, which is now officially the top-grossing animated film in box office history. Little girls are all asking for Princess Elsa's blue gown, and parents are scrambling to find it. This has led to people sewing their own versions of the dress and selling them on Etsy and eBay for a thousand dollars or more. One mom told TODAY, "I didn't realize this movie was going to be such an obsession. We saw this film and then out of nowhere, she wanted all this stuff and it was unavailable." One toy retail expert says, "You just can't get it. It's really sold out and it's probably the hottest thing out there right now."

New Hurricane Storm Surge Risk Maps

National forecasters will be introducing new maps for the Atlantic hurricane season this year that show not only the potential winds, but the potential for flooding from storm surges. The maps are being introduced because it was found that most Americans living on hurricane-vulnerable coastlines were paying too much attention to the wind strength predictions and not enough to storm surge in deciding whether to evacuate. Storm surge specialist Jamie Rhome of the National Hurricane Center said, "We are not a storm surge savvy nation. Yet storm surge is responsible for over half the deaths in hurricanes." The new maps, which will be issued 48 hours before landfall and updated every six hours, will enable people to see whether their property is likely to flood.

Daycare Costs More In Florida Than College

Eek! New research blogged by The Washington Post reveals the costs of raising a child comes earlier than expected. A report from Child Care America reveals that the annual cost of day care for an infant exceeds the average cost of in-state tuition and fees at public colleges in 31 states (and Florida is one of them). The study found that in Florida, the average annual cost of daycare averages around $8,229, while a year of public college tuition runs around $6,882. The difference is $2,067.
Researchers say that in New York, for example, day care will set you back nearly 15 thousand dollars, while in-state college tuition is just 6,500 dollars. The other top states with huge price gaps between day care and public college are: Massachusetts, Maryland, Colorado and Oregon. In South Carolina, however, the opposite is true as college intuition is higher than the cost of day care by about four thousand dollars a year

Geocache Is The Winning Word

Remember last month when I mentioned that Scrabble was updating their dictionary and asking for your help in adding a new word? Well the new word added is geocache, which means, "to seek items by means of a GPS device as part of a game." As an eight-letter word, it will be challenging to use, since players have only seven letters at a time. The Number 2 word was "zen," while other runners-up were: "bitcoin"; "cosplay"; and "ew." Hasbro had asked fans to nominate their picks on the company's Facebook page. The update will be available in stores this summer and is the first update ever in the 9 years the Scrabble dictionary has been available. So does this mean you can use the word now? Or wait until summer?

Planning A Vacation While At Work Will Cost You

Everyone needs a break sometimes, but new research finds you shouldn't book your getaway from your desk at work. A poll of 4,500 U.S. vacationers reveals that people are more likely to book a more expensive hotel when they book from work. Researchers found that people who made reservations during business hours not only booked more expensive hotels, but were also less satisfied than people who stayed at the same hotel, but booked during non-business hours. Researchers say, "We speculate that occurs because people are either more fatigued at work and tend to buy more expensive items or that vacations seem more appealing while people are at work. This kind of preliminary data indicates that people should not be making purchases when they are working." Researchers also found people enjoyed their vacations more if they paid for it in advance.
