The drug, called ipilimumab, which is sold in the U.S. as Yervoy, is an antibody that activates the immune system to fight the skin cancer. Melanoma is the deadliest type of skin cancer, and although it's almost always curable if found and treated early, it can spread to other parts of the body, and then becomes almost always fatal, with most patients living less than 18 months after diagnosis. Although the new drug is far outperforming expectations, it doesn't work for everyone, with about a 20 percent chance or greater that it will have no effect on a patient.
