Ocala Eye presents Malone’s Miracle Money Makers are back for another year of fundraising fun for now our 13th annual Radiothon for Kids to benefit Florida Health Shands Children’s Hospital. Our Radiothon is scheduled for Thursday, September 19th but the fundraising has already begun!
Talk about beauty, personality and dedication! 3 years ago Caitlyn had this persistent pain in her stomach. Being a student at Trinity Catholic High School and a competitive Cheerleader flier (the one launched into the air) she had little time for pain. But as it got worse, mom Christi decided to take her to her pediatrician. Then the simple office visit turned Caitlyn’s life around. She was immediately referred to Shands Children’s Hospital, where Dr. Saleem Islam, through extensive testing, discovered the root of Caitlyn’s pain. Caitlyn had ulcerative colitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease where the body’s immune system attacks the intestines. Would that slow Caitlyn down? NO! For a year, she received injections of a drug called REMICADE every other month. The medication reduced the symptoms of ulcerative colitis, but it didn’t work as well as Caitlyn had hoped. The only other option was to surgically remove the entire colon, an option that Caitlyn didn’t take lightly. After research, other options and a lot of emotional trauma, Caitlyn had a colectomy 18 months ago. But as I said earlier, nothing seems to slow Caitlyn down! She is doing well, quite well to be honest. She has begun a teen support group of children who have Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis and devotes much of her free time in helping others. Her cheerleading team recently took 2nd place in competition and the 16 year old is learning to drive! Her negative has turned into quite a positive with Caitlyn already planning her premed undergraduate school courses. I am proud to have Caitlyn on my Radiothon team. In the next few weeks, she and I will tell you about events that we’re working on to raise funds. Plus a special day at Gainesville and Ocala IHOP restaurants where you can help!
