Tell those mosquitos to bug off!

9 Ways to combat mosquitos naturally

Before they breed, congregate, bite, and drive you indoors, consider these natural ways to combat summer's worst foe: the mosquito.

Turn On a Fan

Mosquitoes are lightweights. A fan blowing at a speed of two miles per hour simply is overpowering to a mosquito. So another option is to strategically place fans around your deck or patio to get a good bug-free breeze going.Photo by parkseed.com

Plant Lemon Grass

Thai lemon grass contains citronella oil, which has a strong scent that makes it hard for mosquitos to find you. At the same time, lemon grass is a beautiful mounding perennial. Plant some on your property wherever your family and friends like to congregate.

I'm sorry, could you repeat that?

10 Common noises that can cause permanant hearing loss

What Counts as Excessive Noise?

Frightening fact: Hearing loss can occur after a one-time noise exposure at 120 decibels, such as gunfire, or continuous noise exposure to dangerous levels of 85 decibels or above over a prolonged period of time. It's important to know what levels are safe in order to protect your hearing:

110-140 decibels:
Rock concert or jet engine
Firecracker
Nail gun
Ambulance siren
Chainsaw
Home stereo speakers at maximum volume

* Just 1 minute of exposure to noises at this level can result in permanent hearing loss, according to the National Institutes of Health.

85-100 decibels:
Garbage truck
Power mower
Motorcycle
Snowmobile
Jackhammer

* Continual exposure to noises in this range can cause permanent hearing loss.

Thrifty Tuesday: Taking the mystery out of tipping!

How much to tip everyone

Tip jars are popping up in the most unexpected places, says Chris Young, executive director of The Protocol School of Washington, a company that offers courses in etiquette. “What used to be old-fashioned customer service has now become a privilege to receive” for customers, he says. But with workers facing stagnant wages and increases in the cost of living, it’s little wonder tipping has become more widespread, he says.

Here’s a guide to some of the other more unusual places customers are expected to tip in 2013 (besides fast-food chains).
