1 In 3 Designer Items Sold Online Are Fake

According to new research by fashion retailer Crossroads Trading, which surveyed 1,000 adults, one in three people who had ordered a designer item online were left furious when a counterfeit product arrived on their doorstep. The online retailer advises that consumers be more wary about purchasing high-end items - particularly if they come from an unknown retailer. SO how can you spot a fake? here is a small list:

1. On non-vintage Louis Vuitton monogramed products, the LV will never be cut off and the LV monogram will always be symmetrical, no matter which way you look at it.

2. The soles of Christian Louboutin shoes are always made of leather, painted bright glossy red. To imitate this look, many fakes are created with a plastic or resin sole.

3. The back pocket on fake Chanel quilted purses is often the wrong size, usually bigger than the real version with a diamond quilted pattern that lines up imperfectly. Also, the leather on the inside flap should be perfectly flat and smooth, not wrinkly.

4. To spot a fake pair of Air Jordans, scrutinize the lace holes. Fake Air Jordans usually have all holes in a straight line for easier construction, instead of having each hole spread out wider than the subsequent hole.

5. On Coach logo bags, the 'C' pattern should look like there is no break in the pattern, even at the seams and pockets.

6. For Gucci handbags that have hardware, the hardware will be made of solid metal and will not flake or chip. Some pieces may be engraved--and if so--the engraving will be clean with a high quality finish. Also, check that the stitching on a Gucci handbag is very straight, neat, even and clean.

7. For True Religion jeans, the red Buddah printed on the inside should never be faded. On a real version, the Buddha will never fade, no matter how many times you wash them.

8. UGG boots are made by an American company called Deckers, Inc. and are made in China. Shoes that say they are made in Australia are fake.

9. On Tory Burch Classic Revas flats, look very carefully at how the buckle is adhered - it should be on a separate piece of leather with metal reinforcements right behind the buckle. For all designer shoes, make sure nothing is glued on - ever - because that is a sure sign of a fake.

10. When purchasing used designer items, assess the wear of the items. Almost all designer items are well-made and should stand up to the test of time. If the item has tears, broken pieces, or is coming apart at the seams - it is most likely a fake.
