Watch Out Netflix, Redbox To Offer Instant Access To Movies

Netflix is the king of the mountain when it comes to movie rentals. The company that pushed Blockbuster to the brink of extinction could be facing a new threat (and from the same color too).Coinstar, the owner of Redbox, the automated DVD/BluRay retail kiosks, has worked out a deal with Verizon to launch their very own video streaming service, now being offered by invitation only to select customers. If all goes well, look for Netflix to get some real competition early in 2013. Redbox Instant by Verizon will offer an unlimited streaming-video plan that includes movies from Warner Bros. and pay TV channel Epix, along with four nights of physical DVD rentals, for $8 a month, or $9 a month if customers want Blu-ray discs Does this sound familiar?
The new service, called Redbox Instant by Verizon, is targeted squarely at movie lovers, since the service won't include TV shows or video game rentals at first. The streaming plan will feature about 5,500 movies from the libraries of Warner Bros. and Epix, which is owned by Paramount Pictures, MGM and Lionsgate.
That means subscribers could stream movies such as "The Hunger Games" over computers and certain connected Blu-ray players and Internet-enabled TVs up to 3 months sooner than through Netflix. Plus the attractiveness of 4 DVD rentals a month at an convenient Redbox location AND for half the price of Netflix means the old Netflix is back!!!! Time will tell if this is real competition to the top dog Netflix and if we may see a lower priced Netflix DVD rental/online viewing package soon!
