DIY Microwave Popcorn

January 2, 2018

One of our most loved foods is popcorn!  It's delicious, chock full of fiber and fairly simple to make. However there is concern the simplest way to make it can be dangerous. A report from the FDA indicates that a chemical coating used in microwave popcorn bags breaks down when heated into a substance called perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA), which the Environmental Protection Agency has identified as a “likely carcinogen.” But it's easy to make your own popcorn using a brown lunch bag.  Simply fill the entire bottom layer with kernels. Then fold down the paper bag a few times so that when the kernels start jumping, they don’t explode into your microwave and place in your microwave for about 4 minutes of high. Just remember that is a general setting and you'd do yourself a favor by staying nearby.  When you hear the popping slow to one of less pop a second, it's done! Simply sprinkle with salt, pepper, rosemary or even cinnamon and sugar.  Grate some parmesan cheese shavings into the mix.
